Students enrolled in the Cosmetology program follow the established curriculum by the State Board of Cosmetology and State Department of Education. Students learn through classroom instruction and then apply their knowledge to hands-on experience.

To qualify to take the State Board Exam, high school students are required to complete 1500 clock hours or 1200 credit units of cosmetology training. The hours and credit units offered in these classes are State accredited to eligible students and can be transferred to public and private schools. To be eligible for state credit, students must be at least 16 years of age and have completed the 10th grade. In addition to the fee indicated, students are required to purchase supplies or materials for various specialized courses. Students enrolled in Cosmetology classes are encouraged to participate in Skills USA- VICA.

INTRODUCTION TO COSMETOLOGY – Semester 1

½ Unit -- FEE:    $10.00

Pre-requisites:  None -- (Grade 9)

Introduction to Cosmetology is a course that helps students develop basic salon techniques in the study of personal and professional image/conduct, sanitation, hairstyling, and nail care.  Students perform practical tasks including sanitation, shampooing, various hairstyling techniques, and basic nail care.  Theory related to the various cosmetology tasks is included in this course.

INTRODUCTION TO COSMETOLOGY – Semester 2

½ Unit -- FEE:    $10.00

Pre-requisites:  Introduction to Cosmetology – Semester 1 -- (Grade 9)

This course is a continuation of Cosmetology – A of the first semester.  Entry-level skills and related theory are taught in shampooing, hairstyling, and manicuring.  Special emphasis is placed on employability skills, sanitation, and safety.

NAIL CARE – Semester 1

½ Unit -- FEE:  $10.00

(Nail Care and Applications)

Pre-requisite:  None -- (Grades 10-12)

This course concentrates on total nail care.  Students are taught skills in basic manicuring, pedicuring, artificial nail care, and hand treatments.  Upon successful completion of this course, students are able to demonstrate professional conduct, identify nail disorders/diseases, and perform safety and sanitation on all nail care services.

Pre-requisite:   Nail Care – Semester 1 -- (Grades 10-12)

Nail Care B is a continuation of the first semester course.  Students continue to become competent in nail care services including manicures, pedicures, and artificial nail care.  Information on product knowledge and chemicals used in proper sanitation and safety procedures is included.  After completion of this course, students will have a broad knowledge of requirements for a career in nail technology.

Pre-requisite: Nail Care and Applications -- (Grades 11-12)

This is a one-credit course consisting of two hours of theory and lab.  It provides students with a study of and practice in advanced nail techniques.  Upon successful completion of this course, students are able to identify a variety of types of sculptured nails and nail art as well as perform procedures for nail sculpturing and nail art.

Pre-requisite: Nail Art – Semester 1 -- (Grades 11-12)

This is a one-credit course consisting of two hours of theory and lab.  Successful completion of Nail Art – A and B will give the student two units. This course provides students with a study of and practice in advanced nail techniques.  Upon successful completion of this course, students are able to perform a variety of types of artificial nail applications.   Safety and sanitation procedures are taught on all nail services.

ADVANCED COSMETOLOGY- Semester 1

½ Unit -- FEE:  $10.00

(Chemical Methodology)

Pre-requisite: Introduction to Cosmetology Semesters 1 and 2 -- (Grades 10-12)

This course focuses on the theory of hair composition and chemical services.  Students learn to perform procedures in chemical relaxing and permanent waving.  Guidelines on safety and sanitation procedures are included.


ADVANCED COSMETOLOGY – Semester 2

½ Unit -- FEE:  $10.00

(Chemical Methodology)

Pre-requisite: Advanced Cosmetology – Semester 1 -- (Grades 10-12)

This course concentrates on chemical procedures, scalp disorders, treatments, and chemical product knowledge related to salon chemical services.  Students learn to perform a scalp and hair analysis and make evaluations based on observations.  Information on safety, sanitation, and professional ethics is included.


ESTHETICS / SKIN CARE – Semester 1

½ Unit -- FEE: $10.00

Pre-requisite: Introduction to Cosmetology or Nail Care (Grades 10-12)

Esthetics focuses on skills and knowledge related to skin care. Students learn the structure and functions of various systems of the body and their effect on the skin. Proper techniques for skin care along with product knowledge are taught. Topics of study include safety, sanitation, skin analysis, diseases, disorders, facial machines, hair removal, and facial massage. Students observe demonstrations and acquire hands-on experiences in the use of state-of –the-art equipment.

ESTHETICS / SKIN CARE – Semester 2

½ Unit -- FEE: $10.00

Pre-requisite: Esthetics / Skin Care Semester 1

Upon successful completion of this second semester course, students are able to prepare clients; assemble sanitized materials; follow procedures for product application; recognize skin disorders; and demonstrate facial massage movement. Students learn to use skin care equipment to perform skin care analysis, and demonstrate their knowledge of treatments for specific skin types.

SALON PRACTICES - Semester 1

FEE: $10.00

Pre-requisite: None

Salon Practices and Management is a one-credit course that helps students develop entry-level management skills for the beauty industry. Students practice all phases of cosmetology in a salon setting. Upon completion of this course, students are able to demonstrate professionalism and to list job-seeking and management skills as well as to exhibit knowledge of the technology used in salons.

COSMETOLOGY EQUIPMENT UTILIZED IN THE PROGRAM:

The Cosmetology Lab is set up as near as possible like a modern-day beauty industry salon with professional work stations, dryers, shampoo stations and professional equipment such as blow dryers and curling irons. Manicure tables, nail centers and up-to-date facial equipment are utilized. Theory classes use a variety of visual aids such as detailed videos on basic procedures and laser disc study in haircutting and science.
