Engineering Drawing/Design and Architectural Design offer a hands-on learning experience for any student interested in working as an Engineer, Architect, Drafter, Builder, Interior Designer, or as a professional in any other design field.  Commercial Art courses focus on skills used in the world of advertising. 

The Drafting Design teacher is certified through the American Design Drafting Association (ADDA), a nationally recognized certifying organization.

Upon completion of the Engineering portion of this program, the student may elect to take the ADDA certification examination to become a nationally certified Design Drafter.

INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING DRAWING – Semester 1

(Introduction to Drafting Design)

½ Unit                         FEE:    $10.00

Pre-requisites:  None -- (Grades 9-12)

This course takes a student who might have no Engineering Drawing experience into the fascinating world of Design.  The student becomes familiar with Drafting instruments and techniques, lettering and drawing techniques, and CAD software.  Skills in Computer Animation are taught as principles of 3-D Animation in Solid Model Design Courses.


INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING DRAWING – Semester 2        

(Introduction to Drafting Design)

½ Unit -- FEE:  $10.00

Pre-requisites: Introduction to Engineering Drawing – Semester 1 -- (Grades 9-12)

Continued emphasis is placed in this course on lettering and drawing techniques, appropriate use of CAD software, multi-view drawing, and basic dimensioning.


ENGINEERING DRAWING AND DESIGN – Semester 1                     

(Intermediate Mechanical Design A)

½ Unit -- FEE:  $10.00

Pre-requisite: Introduction to Engineering Drawing -- (Grades 10-12)

The following topics are included in this second-year course:  section views, auxiliary views, threads and fasteners, pictorial views, dimensioning and Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD).


ENGINEERING DRAWING AND DESIGN – Semester 2                                 

(Intermediate Mechanical Design B)

½ Unit -- FEE:  $10.00

Pre-requisite: Engineering Drawing and Design – Semester 1 -- (Grades 10-12)

In-depth design work is accomplished through the broad understanding of the design process which the student has gained and continues to develop in this course. Students explore 3-D Modeling and work on profile creation, protrusions, and rendering techniques.


INTRODUCTION TO ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN – Semester 1 

½ Unit -- FEE:  $10.00

Pre-requisites:  None -- (Grades 9-12)

This course focuses on the design of residences.  It includes the development of residential floor plans, an exploration of various styles of houses and basic interior design work in the areas of foundations, electrical service and wall sections.


INTRODUCTION TO ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN – Semester 2

½ Unit --FEE:  $10.00

Pre-requisites: Introduction to Architectural Design – Semester 1 -- (Grades 9-12)

As students progress in their understanding of basic architectural design work, they continue to explore the topics covered in the first semester of this course and add to it such topics as roof design and exterior elevations.


ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN  II – Semester 1

½ Unit -- FEE: $10.00

Pre-requisites:  Introduction to Architectural Design -- (Grades 10-12)

This course takes the student of architecture into the more advanced areas of residential design such as multi-level residential floor plans, detail drawings, exterior elevations and residential site planning.


ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN  II – Semester 2

½ Unit -- FEE:  $10.00

Pre-requisites:  Architectural Design II – Semester 1 -- (Grades 10-12)

Experiences in architectural design continue in this advanced course.  These topics, among others, are included:  building specifications, roof designs and career readiness projects.


COMMERCIAL ART – Semester 1

½ Unit -- FEE:    $10.00

(Introduction to Visual Arts)

Pre-requisites: None -- (Grades 9-12)

This is a hands-on, project-based class that focuses on the design and creation of printed advertisements, merchandise packaging, logos, and company slogans.  Students learn the basics of advertisement layout and design and learn many “tricks of the trade” in the business of advertising.  Students use a variety of media to create mock advertisements for everyday products and services.  Students also learn to use Photo Shop, which is the most used software in the advertising industry.  Students are introduced to Computer Animation software.  Students receive ½ unit in Fine Arts for completion of this course.


COMMERCIAL ART/COMPUTER ANIMATION – Semester 2          

 (Introduction to Visual Arts)

½ Unit -- FEE:    $10.00

Pre-requisites: Commercial Art – Semester 1 -- (Grades 9-12)

This is a continuation of Commercial Art-A.  Students are given the opportunity to show off their layout skills by creating entries for several state and local poster contests.  In addition to the printed ad layouts, the student continues to develop skills in Computer Animation.  Students apply the elements of design and sharpen visual communication through animation and design short animated stories.  Students who successfully complete this course are prepared for advanced study of animation and character design.

Syllabus


DRAFTING LAB ASSISTANT

1 Unit  ( ½ per semester) -- FEE:    None

Pre-requisites: Approval by Instructor -- (Grades 10-12)

A small group of specially selected students will aid the Drafting and Design Department in gathering materials, setting up laboratories, filing and inventorying supplies, and performing other duties as directed by the teacher.


EQUIPMENT AND SOFTWARE USED IN THE DRAFTING DESIGN PROGRAM:

Drafting tables with parallel bars, Gateway computers, HP printers, HP plotters, HP scanners, Boxlite computer projector, AutoCad 2000 with Architectural Desktop, Adobe PhotoShop, and Computer Animation.
