CAREER-TECHNICAL
PROGRAMS -- HEALTH SCIENCE
The
Health Science program introduces students to the healthcare
system and assists students in making realistic career
decisions. The courses prepare students for acceptance in
postsecondary healthcare education programs and/or employment in
healthcare jobs. The Health Science program emphasizes the
importance of project, service, and work-based learning
experiences. These courses are designed to assist the student
in acquiring knowledge and professional ethics essential to all
healthcare learners and workers. Development of leadership
skills is enhanced through student participation in Health
Occupations of America (HOSA).
All students must earn
one-half unit of Health to receive a diploma. These Career
Technical courses meet the requirements for a Health credit:`

INTRODUCTION TO HEALTH CAREERS – Semester 1

(Kaleidoscope)
Pre-requisites: None --
(Grades 9-12)
This
one-semester course allows for exploration of health care
careers, including sports medicine, emergency management,
physical therapy, etc. Along with classroom theory, practice is
given in basic health care
skills including the
assessment of blood pressure, pulse, temperature and
respiration. Students are associate members of HOSA and, as
such, are given opportunities to participate in competitions.

COMMUNITY HEALTH – Semester 2

(Community Health)

(Grades 9-12)
This
course is a continuation of Kaleidoscope. It is designed to
allow students an opportunity to develop a basic understanding
of personal health and the health of the community. Students
will demonstrate skills in CPR and first aid. They examine
community health issues such as: alcohol misuse and abuse,
chronic and communicable diseases, and nutrition. They also
explore such areas as dentistry, veterinary medicine and other
health careers.
SPORTS MEDICINE – Semester 1

Pre-requisites: None -- (Grades 10-12)
This course provides students with
the opportunity to become competent healthcare workers. Topics
such as basic sports medicine techniques (taping, wrapping,
etc.) are included. Course content includes anatomy,
physiology, medical terminology, legal aspects of patient/client
care, and ethics as it relates to health science professionals.
Students pay for liability insurance, nametags and dues for HOSA.

Medicine – Semester 1 -- (Grades 10-12)
This course involves the student
employing principles of growth and development in accessing the
health status of athletes. Students discover interests and
abilities in sport-related medicine. Hands-on skills are
acquired that relate to health issues concerning athletes as
students work in healthcare teams and as they learn appropriate
communications for addressing specific populations. Students
pay for liability insurance, nametags and dues for HOSA.
CLINICAL MAJORS – Semester 1

Medicine -- (Grades 10-12)
Students advance their ability to
recognize injuries and provide first aid. Preventive care is
practiced by assisting with techniques such as wrapping and
taping. Students become knowledgeable concerning diseases and
disorders, healthcare delivery systems, and healthcare teams.
Students learn to monitor patient/client status, screenings, and
patient/client interactions. Students pay for liability
insurance, nametags and dues for HOSA.

CLINICAL MAJORS – Semester 2

Majors – Semester 1 -- (Grades 10-12)
This course is a continuation
of Clinical Majors A. Observational and listening skills, along
with related documentation strategies, are practiced. Safe
procedures for patient/client movement are taught. Students
acquire skills related to data collection, treatment planning,
implementation of procedures and patient/client evaluation.
Students pay for liability insurance, nametags, and
dues for HOSA.
HEALTH SCIENCE INTERNSHIP – Semester 1

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION (OPTIONAL)
(Health Science
Continuum/Internship)
Pre-requisites: Sports
Medicine or Clinical Majors or three credits (Grades 11- 12) in
Biology, Advanced Biology, Chemistry, or Physics
Students enroll in this two-hour class and participate in
clinical assignments in a healthcare area, performing the
following: entry-level healthcare skills; legal and ethical
behaviors; and skills that exhibit knowledge of CPR. Students
pay for liability insurance, nametags and dues for HOSA.
HEALTH SCIENCE INTERNSHIP –
Semester 2
1 Unit -- FEE: $10.00
(Health Science
Continuum/Internship)
Pre-requisites: Health
Science Internship – Semester 1 -- (Grade12)
This
two-hour course is a continuation of Health Science
Internship-A. Students acquire advanced skills and knowledge by
practicing healthcare skills in a clinical setting. Skill
performance and legal/ethical awareness as they relate to the
health science professions are stressed. Students pay for
liability insurance, nametags, and dues for HOSA.
HEALTH SCIENCE LAB ASSISTANT
1 Unit ( ½ per Semester) -- FEE:
None
Pre-requisites:
Approval by Instructor -- (Grades 10-12)
A small group of specially selected
students will aid the Health Science Department in gathering
materials, setting up laboratories, filing and inventorying
supplies, and performing other duties as directed by the
teacher.
DRUGS IN
SOCIETY
1/2
Unit FEE: $5.00
Pre-requisites: None
(Grades 9-12)
Drugs in
Society is a one-half credit course that introduces students to
issues regarding drugs as they impact health and lifestyles.
Topics addressed include legal and illegal use of drugs,
lifesaving treatments through pharmaceutical research, and the
role of concerned citizens in drug legislation and drug
education. Drug dependence, addiction and impairment are
discussed, along with drug withdrawal. Tobacco use, its
effects, and distinguishing among the types of tobacco products
are covered, along with other topics of interest.

MENTAL
HEALTH ISSUES

(Grades 9-12)
Mental Health Issues is a one-half
credit course that introduces students to a range of mental
health topics. Topics include: the handicapping conditions of
childhood, depression, and caring for an older person. Other
mental health problems explored are: personality disorders,
obsessive/compulsive disorders, eating disorders, and
panic/anxiety disorder. Students review recent changes in the
management and treatment of mental illness.

SCIENCE EQUIPMENT UTILIZED IN THIS PROGRAM:
Balanced scales, Scale that calculates body fat and weight,
Whirlpool bath for extremity and whole body, Hospital bed,
Physical therapy exercise table, Blood pressure cuffs, Computers
with programs for sports medicine and medical terminology,
Mannequins (CPR & whole body), and Treadmill.
